Katie Sowers was the second woman to hold a full-time NFL coaching position, and the first openly gay coach in the NFL. Katie is entering into her sixth season in the NFL. Katie has spent four years as an offensive assistant coach with the 49ers, working primarily with the Wide Receivers and started her NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons after spending five years as the athletic director of the City of Kansas City. After leaving the 49ers, Sowers volunteered her time as the defensive coordinator for the Ottawa University Flag Football team, becoming the first National Champions in women’s flag football history. Katie entered into her first summer with the Kansas City Chiefs under the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship following the championship year with the Braves. After her time coaching the Kansas City Chiefs at training camp, Katie entered on full time with Ottawa University as the Director of Athletic Strategic Initiatives, a job designed to assist Kansas in becoming a notable home for women in sport, while also continuing her coaching duties. Katie has competed at the highest level of women’s tackle football, playing in the WFA (women’s football alliance) for eight years and being selected as a member of the United States Women’s National Football Team in 2013. Katie has a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in pedagogy from the University of Central Missouri.
Katie is listed as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Sport by Sport360 and won the 2019 Rising Star Award from The Sports Power Brunch: Celebrating the Most Powerful Women in Sports. She was Outsports’ 2017 Female Hero of the Year and named the to the Bleacher Report Power 50. In addition, Katie has been featured in several publications and magazines, such as ESPN, USA Today, NFL.com, Forbes, and Outsports and was named Kansas Leader of the Year in 2021.
Liz Sowers is one of the most highly regarded women’s flag and tackle football players in the country. She played for the West Michigan Mayhem, the Kansas City Titans, and the Kansas City Tribe. Sowers also played quarterback for the Kansas City Glory in the WNFC. She was a First Team All-American receiver for the Titans from 2010 to 2013 and 2015 to 2017. As a member of the Tribe, Sowers led the nation (more than 70 teams) with 987 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns.
Sowers was a member of the 2016, 2018, and 2021 USA’s Women’s Flag Football team. She was also a member of the Sevens Rugby team in 2014, and the Women’s Tackle Football team in 2013 and 2017. The USA Women’s Tackle Football Team earned a gold medal in the IFAF World Championships. Sowers was also named head coach of USA Football's 2022 17U Flag National Team.
Sowers was a selected participant at the NFL’s Women’s Careers in Football Forum in Orlando, Fla., in January 2018. She oversaw team operations and was a player liaison for the women’s soccer club, FC Kansas City, in 2017. From March 2015 to May 2016, Sowers was a Heads-Up Football Assistant Master Trainer for USA Football. She was named to USA Football's 2021 High Performance Committee and Athlete & Coach Advisory Subcommittee.
While working for USA Football, she helped conduct player safety coach clinics, assisted in NFL Play60 camps during the 2015 and 2016 drafts in Chicago, helped with numerous Chiefs camps and clinics, and the women’s mini-camp and girl scouts takeover camps.
Sowers earned a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in May 2013. She was a graduate assistant with the Kansas City women’s basketball program, where she handled film exchange and equipment, while also serving as the team’s graphic designer for marketing and recruiting purposes.
Sowers played four years of college basketball, spending her first two seasons at Hesston College in Hesston, Kan. She earned an associates degree in liberal arts in May 2006, and was named a NJCAA All-American. Sowers set an HC school record for points in a single game (45), points in a season (606) and points in a career (1,100). She played her final two years at NCAA Division I Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. Sowers helped the Golden Grizzlies to a pair of league championships. She also excelled in the classroom and was named Summit League Academic All-Conference in 2008.
